Basti (Medicated Oil/Kadha & Enema)

Basti, or medicated enema, is a key therapeutic procedure in Ayurveda designed to address imbalances in the Vata dosha, which is associated with movement, dryness, and irregularity in the body. The procedure involves the administration of medicated oils or herbal decoctions into the rectum to provide therapeutic benefits. Here’s an overview:

Basti is used to balance the Vata dosha and is often indicated for conditions related to digestive issues, constipation, joint pain, lower back pain, and neurological disorders. It helps in moistening, soothing, and nourishing the colon and rectal area.

Types of Basti:

  • Niruha Basti: Involves the use of herbal decoctions or enemas that help in detoxification and cleansing.
  • Anuvasana Basti: Uses medicated oils or fats that provide nourishment and lubrication to the colon.

Procedure: The procedure usually begins with preparatory treatments, such as dietary adjustments and other preparatory therapies, to prepare the body. The Basti is then administered through the rectum, and the patient is asked to retain the medicated substance for a prescribed duration.

Benefits: Basti helps in reducing dryness and discomfort, improving bowel function, reducing pain and inflammation, and balancing Vata dosha. It is also beneficial in treating chronic conditions like arthritis and certain digestive disorders.
